Mayoi Hachikuji is the cute little ghost girl from the popular anime Bakemonogatari, whom Koyomi Araragi chances upon one day when travelling to a place he didn’t want to be. Mayoi is a plucky little brat, full of confidence and isn’t afraid to get into a scrap, as evidenced by the band-aid on her leg. Mayoi and Koyomi will regularly get into (playful) fights, that is whenever they’re not happily mocking each other.
And so Mayoi is a delightful character despite the tragic circumstances regarding her current existence. Endlessly wandering, Mayoi is burdened with a particularly large, pink, rucksack brimming with her belongings, including plush toys. But Mayoi never complains of its weight and besides, it’s all symbolic in an anime like Bakemonogatari.
The classic school uniform Mayoi wears is made of navy blues and whites, with contrasting patches of red found around her neck and on her bright, stylish shoes. Again, the Bakemonogatari figma get all the cool kicks, with even the soles of Mayoi’s shoes getting a hinting picture of a snail on them. Mayoi has a translucent green bracelet which is removable, but I prefer to term as losable.
A shift:body component is included, which replaces the while bottom half of Mayoi (simply pull in half at her waist). It replaces her jointed legs for a set piece, creating the look of Mayoi crouching in that way she does. There’s just enough spread between her legs to intentionally show off her pink panties (I’m disgusting, I know), and overall really adds to the character.
The joint in her waist allows you to turn her about on the spot quite well, and adds variety when posing. Another item with an unsuspecting joint is that (wonderfully smooth-feeling) rucksack of hers. Though it doesn’t need it for poseability, the joint instead plugs directly into the hole on Mayoi’s back, ensuring this thing won’t slip or get in the way. It’s a simple idea that really takes a lot of the hassle out of posing with such things.
Two holes are strategically placed on Mayoi’s bag, increasing her posing potential a lot. Speaking of, you’ll pretty much need that figma stand connected at all times anyway, since that bag is quite heavy and will severely handicap the balance of Mayoi. You can of course, do a much better job without the rucksack on, but it’s sorta the point that it’s always on Mayoi’s back.
Three facial expressions are provided for Mayoi, and while not as varied as those for Koyomi or Senjougahara, they’re still pretty much flawless in their looks. The first face is Mayoi smiling in a friendly fashion, gazing her lovely red eyes to her right. The second face has her smiling too, but this time with her eyes shut in a very content manner. The final face has Mayoi upset, with a frown on her face married to a yelling mouth, which shows off her little snaggletooth.
Five pairs of hands are also included, and offer an acceptable range for the character. There’s a set of fists, a pair of grasping hands, a set of pointing hands and a set of open hands with the fingers spread. The last pair are open hands too, but with the fingers curled slightly like claws. It’s here that I’ve realised their true purpose, and thus the same for those provided for Koyomi.
It’s so we can pose these two figma together, hands locked in another of their pointless battles. It’s a bit tricky to get the look even half-right, but it’s one I’m sure fans will strive for. Mayoi’s bright yellow umbrella from the OP is here too, and is available to her in open and closed forms. Both are very well moulded, with even the wires showing on the underside.
The di:stage cardboard punch out is suitably pink, with stars and love hearts and all that girly business in the background and the Bakemonogatari logo emblazoned atop it. The figma logo, Mayoi’s name and the series logo are on the front. Even with the usually crippling addition of a large backpack, Mayoi is a good-posing figma. Her expressions work well in a variety of situations and she looks adorable to boot. Though she’s very much a schoolgirl figma, Mayoi still manages to stand out from the pack.
