It’s been a while since I reviewed a Touhou Project figma, so why not one today? The characters from ZUN’s popular game series that have been given the figma treatment are amongst the most popular sold, and it’s small wonder considering how great they look. Sakuya Izayoi is no exception, once again displaying an ease in elegance and an eye for style. The head maid of the Scarlet Devil Mansion is – of course – dressed in a maid’s uniform, and it’s a look I never tire of.
While figma Marisa Kirisame‘s maid uniform was more honest, more long, Sakuya’s in comparison is downright slutty. You were lucky to see a bit Marisa’s shins, but we see those and a whole lot more for Sakuya. The short dress is in an eternal state of lift, swirling around her thighs in a captivating way. Just one slip and you’ll be seeing what she had for breakfast. While the poseability was by no means terrible for Marisa, Sakuya is by far the best posing Touhou girl yet.
Her lovely long legs are as dexterous as can be, and even though Sakuya dons a smart-looking pair of black high heels (and Touhou-regulation style white socks underneath), she can stand by her own very well. There’s plenty of give in her waist for some plucky poses, there’s no interference with arm movement, and her neck has a solid range and never disproportionate. Effectively, this is a perfect as a figma gets in terms of posing; just wonderful.
Sakuya has a cute, short haircut with a pair of flexible ponytail bangs that drape over her shoulders. Her faint blue/purple hair colour is only changed-up by a set of green bows that tie her hair in place. Three faces are included for Sakuya, and show both soft and fierce sides to her personality. The first is Sakuya looking straight ahead with those violet eyes, smiling politely. The second face shows her glaring at something to her right, refusing to take the situation lightly.
The final face has Sakuya grinning with closed eyes. Obviously she’s enjoying herself, be it mopping the floor, messing with the properties of time and space, or stabbing someone Big Time Stylee. Each of these faces looks bang-on for Sakuya. Further adding to the look, a sticker sheet is included with this figma. A range of animated emotions can be created here, with sweat drops, exclamation and question marks, stars, dazed swirls and even pink blushes. These are one-time use stickers only.
Though I find Sakuya quite attractive, I’d be sure to never piss her off either. See, Sakuya is a big fan of knives, and constantly tows at least one around thanks to a small sheath strapped around her left leg. You can actually store her green-handled knife in there (with an appropriate amount of force – it’s a fairly tight connection) for that ready-for-action look. As stated in the included instructions (in in in), you must first remove Sakuya’s leg to slide the knife in place (there is no other way do to it). And while it is quite easy to remove a figma leg, first-timers should take reference to ensure they don’t break something.
There are six other, smaller knives too, which are held in a fashionable manner by Sakuya before flicking them at her foes. Again, instructions show how to properly attach them to the dedicated hands for the job, but be careful anyway – these things are quite pointy, and hurt when you accidentally jab yourself. Also be careful regardless; since they’re tiny and stand the chance of breaking. Other hands include a set of grasping hands, a set of fists, a pair of open hands with the fingers spread and a grasping right hand set on a different angle to the others.
This might be so we can hold Sakuya’s mop on a different degree. The mop is one-piece, and has no articulation like the one for R. Dorothy Wayneright. It looks the part though, with moulded strands in the motion of mopping. The final dedicated hand for Sakuya is a right hand holding a pocket watch, just the thing required when using those time-twisting powers of hers. Keeping with the time theme is the cardboard punch-out, with a large clock face on the top with a blue background. The figma logo, Sakuya’s name and her associative series adorn the front.
Quite the femme fatale, Sakuya Izayoi is a wonderful figma. Her sassy, short maid’s uniform is fantastically sculpted and equipped, especially for the dress section. She poses brilliantly for such a small footprint, and overall is very pleasing to the eye. My only real complaints are minor, like the the lack of ease when plugging those tiny knives in-between her fingers (and the subsequent pain), and maybe a lack of more things for her to play with – though I’m really grasping at nothing issues-wise. Honestly, Sakuya is simply an excellent entry into the Touhou Project figma group, and the figma line in general.
