Its time to open the vault and visit one of the first figma released, and without question the first figma to bear the EX (Exclusive) coding, Konata Izumi! As a (Winter 2008) Wonder Festival release-only, that is why Konata nabs an exclusive numbering. All following figma (bar Black Hair Version Shana) released into this very select line are also major event dedications, though in the past few years Good Smile Company have allowed limited-time ordering online too.
Konata comes from the popular otaku anime comedy Lucky Star, and as Konata is branded as the ultimate otaku, it’s only fitting that she is the first to become an EX figma. No doubt toy otaku like myself were salivating at the look of her, and not just because of her status-symbol flat chest! Another interesting detail is that Konata is one of few to have extra detailing on the plastic window of the box, and certainly the only with text.
A drawing of best friend Kagami Hiiragi is there, looking incredulous and mortified and saying “Really? Are you serious? The first figma of Lucky☆Star is here!? WoooHoo!!” The figma itself is low on accessories but big on potential. Referencing the time when Konata does cosplay of the famous Haruhi Suzumiya at a café, complete with rude, tsundere behaviour and a Hare Hare Yukai song and dance number, fans of the show will instantly recall the fun had from this moment in the anime.
Dressed exactly like her hero (she even has the yellow ribbon in her hair!), the famous school uniform (Winter Version for those playing at home) that Konata dons stays true in every detail to Haruhi’s. Though now outdated, it’s become such a recognisable and parodied uniform that you cannot deny the classic status it has achieved. And to avoid trouble, Max Factory has made the sleeves of the top more puffed out (and less puffed out for her chest) to suit short Konata’s stature.
Speaking of, Konata as a whole is shorter than the Haruhi figma, so the uniform she’s wearing was specifically made for this figma. There were no transfers of parts to achieve the to-scale look of this figma. Even the socks and shoes are the right size, with those small blocky shoes we all know becoming even smaller and (probably) blockier for Konata. Last but not least, the “Team Leader” armband that Haruhi wears often is here also.
Just like her regular figma Version, Konata as a poseable figure suffers at the hands of her original character design. Max Factory have done a wonderful job of keeping to scale Konata’s equally wonderful blue hair, which is one of the longest (and certainly the heaviest) encountered in the line. Considering the length, I doubt Konata has ever cut it in her life (besides some minor trimming to keep it looking good). The sheer weight against Konata’s petite frame means usage of the stand is almost hereditary.
And besides, I know plenty of people out there with this or the other figma Konatas have suffered the breakage of Konata’s lovely, curling ahoge, so much love and respect for that stand. There’re just two faces of the big, green eyed Konata here; a friendly smiling face and a more serious, tsundere face for when she’s in full Haruhi mode. There are also only four pairs of hands here, a set of fists, a set of open hands with the fingers spread, another pair of open hands with the fingers together, and a set of pointing hands. They’re all you’ll need really for any Hare Hare Yukai poses, but I still wanted more.
That said, you can always hit of the other Konata figma you might have for extra hands, expressions and accessories, and vice versa, as they’re certainly swappable. Sadly, there are no other toys for this Konata to play with, so its up to you, your imagination, and this lovely, rare little figma to make it worthwhile. Besides the ahoge, I must also warn new buyers that the ends of the hands that plug into Konata’s arms do have the ball ends that were the cause of so many breaks and snaps in the early days of figma before they fixed it, so be very careful here especially. But if you do, you’ll be treated with a fun and exciting figma whose place amongst the rarest is justified.
